  46. I have an unmodified FT-5200. It is able to operate in the cross band
  47. mode by holding down the RPT button while turning on the power.
  48.  
  49. The audio seems to be coupled from one band to the other by placing
  50. the mic near the speaker. I see from the schematic that there is a
  51. CMOS switch that connects the audio in & out that is on the mic 
  52. connector (signals used for packet connection to radio). Do I need
  53. to open the jumper at spot 17 to allow the cross band audio to
  54. go through this path, and not the mic - speaker?

  100. Mine will show the low batt indicator only if left on receive for a long time.
  101. I dont look at it during transmit. It will not show on rx if the battery is
  102. low enough to not transmit well. It transmits a buzz if you try to transmit when
  103. the battery is weak, but the low batt will not show on rx at that battery
  104. level.  If 'batt' is showing in rx mode, and I tx, the display will just go blank
  105. and the radio shuts off.

  107. I think that there is an internal adjustment for the batt indicator.  I havent
  108. tweaked mine since I usually run either mobile or headset with it and dont 
  109. look at the display.

  149. Many years ago, when I first started using X10-type modules and lost a
  150. couple after one of our (numerous) Kansas summer thunderstorms, I mounted
  151. a Joslyn surge arrester in my main distribution box; I haven't had any
  152. X10 loses since.

  154. When I wired my new detached garage/shop building last fall, I installed
  155. a second arrester in that building's distribution box (which has it's
  156. own ground rod).  I have at least 10 X10-type units in the garage, and
  157. I haven't lost one yet (but that's less than a year's use).

  265. I actually built such a device to go from 146.000 to 446.000.  I have
  266. no intentions of publishing it, however, as it is quite difficult
  267. to get enough transmit filtering,  even with spectrum analyzer to 
  268. tweak it up properly.  Ended up using a tight bandpass filter 
  269. and notch filter.   It would be even tougher to get the box to 
  270. cover the whole repeater band.  It has a pretty decent dynamic
  271. range, since I used a high level (meets a popular criteria 
  272. of the input intercept number exceeding the NF, dBm vs dB
  273. at 290 Kelvin).

  275. Dual conversion would help, except that this raises the cost
  276. even more.

  290. give me your opinions on which is a 'better' scanner.  I was originally
  291. looking for the best scanner for picking up action at NASCAR and INDY CAR
  292. racing events, but I also want the most bang for my buck.  The Radio Shack
  293. folks taught the 'undocumented' features of the PRO-52 (which they say they
  294. are not allowed to discuss, but they might...) which throught programming can
  295. give you access to cellular frequencies (not a big point with me, but
  296. interesting).  On the other hand I've seen a lot of the BC200XLTs at the races.

  387. What are these voice recorders good for?  Playback of your callsign?  An 
  388. "answering machine" for my rig?  I'm sorry you had to buy one to determine it 
  389. was worthless.

  393. I was also wondering about DTMF selective calling.  Every manufacturer offers 
  394. it in some fashion on some of their rigs but there is no standard.  What good 
  395. is this one?  I wasn't smart enough to keep from buying this one.
