Subject: Cross Band Repeat Mode on FT-5200 Audio Connection
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
I have an unmodified FT-5200. It is able to operate in the cross band
mode by holding down the RPT button while turning on the power.
The audio seems to be coupled from one band to the other by placing
the mic near the speaker. I see from the schematic that there is a
CMOS switch that connects the audio in & out that is on the mic
connector (signals used for packet connection to radio). Do I need
to open the jumper at spot 17 to allow the cross band audio to
go through this path, and not the mic - speaker?

Mine will show the low batt indicator only if left on receive for a long time.
I dont look at it during transmit. It will not show on rx if the battery is
low enough to not transmit well. It transmits a buzz if you try to transmit when
the battery is weak, but the low batt will not show on rx at that battery
level. If 'batt' is showing in rx mode, and I tx, the display will just go blank
and the radio shuts off.
I think that there is an internal adjustment for the batt indicator. I havent
tweaked mine since I usually run either mobile or headset with it and dont
look at the display.

Just picked a used icom w2a dual band ht. Really pleased with it. Would
appreciate any comments on the rig, what kind of accessories you would buy,
what kinds of mods are available.

Many years ago, when I first started using X10-type modules and lost a
couple after one of our (numerous) Kansas summer thunderstorms, I mounted
a Joslyn surge arrester in my main distribution box; I haven't had any
X10 loses since.
When I wired my new detached garage/shop building last fall, I installed
a second arrester in that building's distribution box (which has it's
own ground rod). I have at least 10 X10-type units in the garage, and
I haven't lost one yet (but that's less than a year's use).

Subject: Radio Direction Finder wanted for 2-meter
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
I am looking for a mobile (12v) antenna system to locate signals from the road.
The use for this system will be to find downed hang-glider pilots usually
transmitting fairly weak signals through varied terrain.
If anyone can recommend a system that is simple to use, and can connect with
my 2-meter mobile rig, please let me know.
also, I tried to find this info in the FAQ and archive server (though which one
I don't know exactally). where in the FAQ could I have found this info, or is
this the right place to ask.
much thanks, and please respond directly by e-mail to my address below, as my

We went to a local electrical supply house to place the order. Its a GE part.

The supply house just gave us a call when they came in and the rest is history.

I actually built such a device to go from 146.000 to 446.000. I have
no intentions of publishing it, however, as it is quite difficult
to get enough transmit filtering, even with spectrum analyzer to
tweak it up properly. Ended up using a tight bandpass filter
and notch filter. It would be even tougher to get the box to
cover the whole repeater band. It has a pretty decent dynamic
range, since I used a high level (meets a popular criteria
of the input intercept number exceeding the NF, dBm vs dB
at 290 Kelvin).
Dual conversion would help, except that this raises the cost
even more.

To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
If anyone out there has knowledge of obth of these units could you
give me your opinions on which is a 'better' scanner. I was originally
looking for the best scanner for picking up action at NASCAR and INDY CAR
racing events, but I also want the most bang for my buck. The Radio Shack
folks taught the 'undocumented' features of the PRO-52 (which they say they
are not allowed to discuss, but they might...) which throught programming can
give you access to cellular frequencies (not a big point with me, but
interesting). On the other hand I've seen a lot of the BC200XLTs at the races.
Any comparison information or opinions would be welcome.
Thanks in advance....

What are these voice recorders good for? Playback of your callsign? An
"answering machine" for my rig? I'm sorry you had to buy one to determine it
was worthless.
Is there anyone out there who has one that finds it a useful feature?
I was also wondering about DTMF selective calling. Every manufacturer offers
it in some fashion on some of their rigs but there is no standard. What good
is this one? I wasn't smart enough to keep from buying this one.
